A Cat's Tale

Everything about Alaska was big. Big plane, first time I ever flew, over vast waterways, big mountains, big wildlife in a big land. So when I saw the cat "Freeway," he seemed a little out of place, but in the scheme of things, he was right at home.

Everywhere, there was such vastness and diversity, the wildness of the unfamiliar. The nursery in the hospital at Anchorage had been destroyed during an earthquake, just months prior to my son, Lyle being born there, premature, 5 days after my arrival.

Affordable apartments outside the military base were hard to find. We moved into a 1 bedroom, with a living room, a small kitchen and a sink in the bedroom. The bathroom was in the hallway!

The cat was always at my heels, and in the door. He leaped onto the small counter, strutting, poking his head in bacon drippings, before I could get him out.

My heart sank when he had got in, and I didn't see him, in light of the "wive's tale" that cats will "suck the milk from a baby's breath, and smother them." I put two pieces of luggage over the bassinet till I could find the cat. Could not find him till I looked at the bassinet and saw the space between the luggage open.

Sickened, I pulled back the luggage, and there the cat was larger than my son , curled up next to him, both asleep. The cat never made it in anymore, but as the "northern lights" ignited the sky, I heard the "meows" of Freeway from the hall.

I was told, "The cat likes to use the toilet," was why he rushed to the bathroom door. Well that did it, bad enough to have to unlock the door, enter a dark hallway, unlock the bathroom door, and reverse the routine. I was NOT sharing the bathroom with a cat, and surely not with a cat, I didn't know. So the cat had to share someone else's bathroom.
