About Cats and Dogs
In the scheme of things, I am a "cat person." There is something about a cat's capricious repose and mystical nature that harmonizes with my own whimsical traits. Though this is true, some of my first childhood bonds were with dogs.
As a teen, my interest was boys, literature and animals, so one might see I didn't rank science very high. It was evident to my science teacher I had no interest in the class, nor being there.
Study periods, I daydreamed, refused the cruelty of dissecting insects, and during library research read the stories of Greek mythology. So when he announced that "we were to do a term paper on what had interest us most during the whole year, and would be 75% of our grade for the year," I saw my shot at it.
I wrote about dogs. The term paper was befittingly thick, tracing the history of the dog and the rewards of their companionship. There were graphs, sketches and narration of the traits of the various breeds.
I got an A- on the term paper, that brought my sad D's in science to an average. Of course my science teacher, called me to his desk after class to inform me, that "through maybe an oversight on his part, he thought everyone understood, that the subject of the most interest was to be a subject in science."
I accepted my A- for "About Dogs" without fanfare, and my science teacher politely accepted I would not be in his class the coming year.
